01The call

One afternoon, an attorney contacted our team in a state of panic. His organization was actively dealing with a ransomware-related cyber event. He wasn't an existing customer. He wasn't calling for a sales conversation. He needed answers.

02The assumption

Like many organizations facing a cyber incident, one of his biggest concerns wasn't just the operational disruption—it was whether his cyber insurance coverage would be enough to protect the business from the financial consequences of the attack.

He believed he had sufficient coverage. He assumed the policy would respond as expected.

But assumptions are dangerous during a cyber crisis.

03How leaders actually decide

As cybersecurity professionals, we often talk about risk in technical terms—vulnerabilities, controls, threat actors, and compliance requirements. The challenge is that most business leaders don't make decisions based on technical terminology. They make decisions based on business impact.

Event ActiveModeling the exposure

Using ThreatCaptain, I was able to quickly model the situation and evaluate the financial exposure associated with the event. We reviewed what the organization believed their insurance policy covered and compared it against the potential impact they were carrying.

Within minutes, the picture became much clearer.

The numbers didn't align.

Figures withheld — client confidential

The modeled financial exposure exceeded what they thought was covered. More importantly, several assumptions they had regarding their policy did not appear to match the realities of the incident they were experiencing.

The conversation immediately shifted fromI think we're protectedWhat do we do next?

That moment was powerful.

What stood out most wasn't the technology—it was the trust that came from complete transparency.

04Under pressure

In the middle of a ransomware event, businesses are overwhelmed. They're worried about downtime, legal exposure, financial loss, reputation damage, and whether the decisions they've made in the past will be enough to get them through the crisis. In those moments, people don't need a sales pitch. They need honest answers.

05The honest walkthrough

Rather than telling this attorney what he wanted to hear, we walked him through what the numbers actually showed. We helped him understand where his cyber insurance appeared strong, where gaps potentially existed, and what the financial reality of the situation looked like. The conversation became less about fear and more about a practical path forward.

06Trust, almost immediately

That level of transparency built trust almost immediately. We weren't simply assessing risk—we were helping guide him through one of the most stressful business events he had ever experienced. Every recommendation was tied to reducing risk, improving insurability, and strengthening resilience moving forward.

07The broader conversation

As the crisis stabilized, that trust became the foundation for a broader strategic conversation.

Together, we completed a comprehensive cybersecurity reassessment, identified areas where IT spending could be better aligned with actual business risk, and created a roadmap focused on reducing exposure while supporting the organization's cyber liability requirements.

08The outcome

The outcome was a win on multiple levels. Most importantly, the firm gained the guidance and support it needed to navigate a difficult situation and emerge in a stronger position. From a business perspective, the relationship evolved into a fully managed services engagement, allowing us to become their long-term technology and cybersecurity partner.

That experience reinforced one of the biggest lessons from my experience with ThreatCaptain: when you can clearly quantify risk, communicate it honestly, and help clients make informed decisions, trust follows. And trust often becomes the catalyst for deeper, more strategic partnerships.
